Free Documentary Screening:
Flax – Threads of Time

Flax – Threads of Time is a multidisciplinary heritage and arts project exploring Ireland’s flax and linen heritage through history, storytelling, traditional skills, contemporary creativity, community participation and immersive technology. Join us for a screening of the 30-minute documentary that portrays the past, present, and future of flax production in Ireland.

Created by eco social artist Kathy Kirwan – The Art of Nature, in collaboration with Wombat Media, Flax – Threads of Time brings this story to life through an immersive experience combining VR, documentary film, projection, artworks, oral histories, historical research, storytelling and live demonstrations of traditional flax processing.

Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate

Time: 10:20pm - 10:50am

Duration: 30 minutes

Capacity: Standing room with limited seating, first-come, first-served for seating.

Using Needle Felt to Create a Flower Brooch

This hands-on workshop, run by Feltmakers Ireland, will teach the basics of needle felting to create a fantasy flower brooch. The sample flower shown can be made with a happy face, too!

​

Please note that this needle felting workshop is not suitable for children under 10 due to sharp needles. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Time: 3:30pm - 5:00pm

Duration:  1.5 hours

Capacity: 8 people

A Hands-On Introduction to Spindle Spinning

The Irish Guild of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers will run a workshop teaching the basics of spindle spinning with this hands-on workshop.

​

Spindles will be provided, and if participants wish to take away their spindles from the class, they can do so, with each one costing just  €15.

​

Time: 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Duration:  45 minutes to 1 hour

Capacity: 8 people

Materials required: None. Materials will be provided.

Coiled Basket Technique

This hands-on workshop wil be run by Sharon Wells of Sharon Wells Art.

​

An ancient technique traditionally using grasses and cords to make utensils in a time prior to textiles and wool. Our version will use cord and Irish dyed yarn and you will learn a technique which can be adapted for modern textile embellishment and construction.

Time: 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Duration:  1 hour

Capacity: 8 people

Materials required: None. Materials will be provided.

From Plant to Pigment: a natural dyeing demo

Join natural dyer Malú Colorín from Talú, who will talk about the history and chemistry of natural dyeing. For over 30,000 years, humans have collaborated with plants, insects and minerals to dye textiles. In this talk, Malú will cover some of the most interesting aspects of this history, while also demonstrating and explaining the chemistry behind the colours.
